Although it would be ideal if such programs did not need to exist, Brevard County is fortunate to have the Children’s Advocacy Center of Brevard (CACB) and the Child Protection Team (CPT). These two programs work in collaboration not only to prevent and investigate child abuse, but also to protect child victims. As the program manager and fiscal agent, The Space Coast Health Foundation is privileged to serve in this capacity and support these programs which provide services to abused children and their families.
Child abuse is complex, and requires expertise and comprehensive partnerships in order to strengthen the team approach to decision-making and intervene for the child’s safety. By merging the time-tested CPT model with the Children’s Advocacy Center philosophy many disciplines, such as law enforcement, child protection staff, prosecutors, mental health personnel, and medical and victim advocacy professionals work together to conduct interviews and make team decisions on cases of child abuse.
Located on site at the CACB are protective investigators from the Florida Department of Children and Families, the Child Protection Team and the Clinical Intervention Program, which provides crisis intervention services and short-term counseling free of charge to child victims and their non-offending caregivers.
The purpose of the CPT is to facilitate a medically directed, multidisciplinary approach to the investigation of reported child abuse and neglect. The team works to ensure a comprehensive assessment is completed in order to meet the child victim’s needs.
CPT Brevard is one of 25 in Florida’s statewide network of Child Protection Teams. If child abuse or neglect is reported to the Florida Abuse Hotline and accepted for investigation, the case is automatically eligible for CPT assessment.
